6 Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Don’t let exhaustion ruin the holiday season. Sure, you have to spend extra time decorating the house, shopping for holiday gifts, and preparing for out-of-town guests. But you also need to make time for yourself. Here are six tips for staying healthy during the holidays, both physically and mentally!

  1. Adopt a Healthy Eating Plan
    Filling your plate with fresh produce gives you more energy than sugary holiday cookies. To boost my whole-foods intake, I often prepare smoothies packed with blueberries, flax seed, kale, and banana. This easy-to-digest meal gives me energy.
  2. Start the Day with Yoga
    I’m just as groggy and blurry-eyed in the morning as the next person. So to wake myself up, I enjoy stretching and meditating with yoga. The gentle exercise not only clears away holiday season stress, but it also loosens muscles that become tight from running errands.

    It may be chilly outside, but an afternoon in the sun is the perfect remedy for the holiday blues. Lately, I’ve been tackling last-minute leaf raking and going on long dog walks through the park before snow settles in for the season. Is this the winter when you finally learn how to cross country ski or build a snowman in the front yard with the kids?
  4. Schedule Date Nights
    Even if you’ve spent every night this week brainstorming ideas for holiday gifts, sneak in a date night with your special someone. A dinner out, cuddling on the couch with a movie, or taking a long evening drive to gaze at holiday lights gives you a mental break and some much-needed bonding time with your sweetheart.
  5. Take a Nap
    There’s nothing wrong with taking naps as an adult. I’ve never been able to do the 20-minute power nap thing, but an hour away from the computer screen is magical. I usually wake up refreshed, clear-headed, and ready to tackle my next task.
  6. Embrace Winter Fashion
    Finally, bundle up. You don’t want to battle a cold and a holiday to-do list at the same time. I’m loving the new trends of loop-style infinity scarves and tall boots. They not only look great but also keep me extra warm.
