5 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Holiday

5 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Holiday

Posted by Jen, My Beauty Bunny

The holiday season is a busy time when you might use a lot of additional products such as wrapping paper, presents and decorations, but you still want to protect the environment at much as possible. You can still take the time to find eco-friendly items while shopping online and at brick and mortar stores. Here are some tips to make the holidays fun AND earth-friendly!mybeautybunny

#1: Use Biodegradable or Recycled Wrapping Paperrecycled_gift_wrap_flickrcrop
When you are buying wrapping paper for holiday gifts, read the labels to learn if it is manufactured from biodegradable materials. You can also wrap presents in recycled bags, paper or even fabric. Be creative! Makes your gifts more fun!

#2: Use a Potted Christmas Tree or Hanukkah Bush

If you are accustomed to using an artificial tree, then you should know it emits pollutants from petroleum-based substances into your home. Thousands of artificial trees are thrown into trash dumps each year, leading to extensive pollution. Buy a small potted tree to decorate for the holidays and enjoy it after the season ends. I bought my first real tree this year, and I’m very excited about it!

#3: Use Light-Emitting Diode Bulbs

To avoid wasting electrical power, use light-emitting diode bulbs on Christmas trees and around windows. Instead of leaving your holiday lights on all day and night, use a timer to turn on the devices in the evening.

#4: Give Simple Presents that are Eco-Friendly
Because most people already have so much STUFF in their homes, giving an experience such as tickets to a play or a trip to an amusement park is usually quite welcome. Trips and experiences provide more memories and are more eco-friendly than battery-operated gadgets! Products that are used frequently by the whole family, like soaps, lotions, lip balms and body wash are always appreciated.

#5: Buy Natural Soaps, Lip Treats and Lotions for the Holidayssoap
If you are going to a party for the holidays (and you should!), then choose to use makeup, lotions and soaps made of natural products rather than harsh chemicals. When you are shopping for beauty care products as gifts, take time to read the labels to see if the product is made from natural materials rather than chemicals that pollute the environment. I have used Tom’s of Maine toothpaste for many years, but as a beauty blogger, I am particularly excited about their new Lip Gloss and Lip Shimmer! The Lip Gloss soothes dried winter lips with a hint of color and mega shine. The Lip Shimmer gives you the perfect amount of color and a little extra sparkle! They are both made without artificial dyes, parabens, phthalates or phenoxyethanol.

Remain Diligent during the Holiday Season

Just because it is the holiday season, don’t forget about buying, using and giving eco-friendly products. Because so many products are purchased during the holiday season and the stores are crowded, it’s easy to forget to read labels and remember to be environmentally friendly and animal-friendly, but with a little effort, you can have an eco-friendly holiday!
