Ask Susanne: How often should you replace your toothbrush?

Posted by Susanne, Associate Brand Manager and resident Registered Dental Hygienist

Did you know that one of our brand managers is also a registered dental hygienist? When we need advice on how to best take advantage of our natural oral care products, like our NEW Naturally Clean toothbrush, we like to ask Susanne.

Dear Susanne,

Back when I was a single guy, I never worried about changing my toothbrush. My wife, then girlfriend, would have to physically throw my old one away for me to consider getting a new one. But now that I’m a dad, I’m much more conscious of setting an example of good oral care for my kids. Plus, I’ve heard that toothbrushes are breeding grounds for germs. How often should you replace your toothbrush?

Curious Dad

asksusanneDear Dad,

Splurge! Tooth brushing plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal so keep a supply of replacement toothbrushes on hand. We know that the oral cavity is home to hundreds of different types of microorganisms, therefore, it is not surprising that some of these bacteria are transferred to a toothbrush during use. It is very important to change toothbrushes after you’ve had a cold, since the bristles can collect germs that can lead to re‐infection.

Even if you haven’t been sick, an older toothbrush might not work as well. How often should you replace your toothbrush? When it begins to show wear, or every three months, whichever comes first. Toothbrush bristles tend to wear down or fray with continued use. Once this happens, they do not clean as well.Naturally Clean

But doesn’t all that toothbrush replacing produce a lot of trash, you may ask? Never fear!  Thanks to our Natural Care Brigade with TerraCycle, you can recycle your used toothbrushes (any brand) and other oral care items such as toothpaste tubes, toothpaste caps, floss containers plus mouthwash bottles and caps. Happy brushing!
