Avoiding cabin fever with Tom’s of Maine

Tom’s of Maine employees are definitely accustomed to winter. Our corporate office is located in Kennebunk, Maine, and our factory is in nearby Sanford, Maine. Most winters we get our share of snow, ice and cold, or as Mainers more generally refer to it, “weath-ah”. When we’re not busy making natural toothpaste, natural soap and other personal care products, we need to find other creative ways to stay busy. Here are some ideas from our team on how to avoid cabin fever!

Rather than doing “spring cleaning,” I like to use the colder days as a time to spruce up the apartment. EnchiladasIn addition to big cleaning projects, I like to put new art up on the walls and rearrange furniture. It’s a good way to keep busy when it is too chilly to play outside!

When the weather is cold, I make food and drinks that remind me of warmer places, like my home in Mexico. I avoid cabin fever by making delicious Mexican Food and Margaritas, and picturing myself on a Mexican Beach.

I avoid cabin fever by… baking. I enjoy trying out new recipes and sharing the treats with family and friends.

I change the desk top background to something summer-y like a lawn with daisy’s in it or a beach scene. I also may listen to ‘summer music’ like the beach boys- any playlist that reminds me of the beach or washing cars!newfloor

I live in an old house with a never ending list of projects. I like to tackle the bigger home improvement projects during the winter since – living on the coast – I am almost never inside during the summer. I am currently re-carpeting one bedroom… while streaming podcasts on my phone for entertainment!

I try new recipes saved on my Pinterest boards.

I’ve found that if you’re snowed in, or it’s just too cold for you to go out, a bookshelf well stocked with books, movies and records will always find a way to keep you entertained.

I beat cabin fever by playing games with the kids on the Kindle Fire!

I avoid cabin fever by looking through my cookbooks to find  new recipes. I especially enjoy cooking on a chilly Sunday afternoon with football (preferably the Patriots) on in the background. It’s fun trying new recipes especially when there are yummy leftovers that  make for an easy mid-week meal!

If it’s cold outside and you’re stuck indoors – there’s nothing like a little lobster fest with friends to get things going.
