Easy Tips for Healthy Living

Here at Tom’s of Maine, we keep the good health of our consumers top of mind when formulating our natural toothpaste, natural deodorant and other personal care products. But even with the best intentions, sometimes we struggle with maintaining a healthy lifestyle for ourselves! Here are some easy tips from Tom’s employees on how to make good health a part of your daily life.

Parking at the far end of any parking lot is an easy way to get some exercise in, simply. Also you leave the closer spots open for someone that might need them more.

This is a tricky one when holidays and summer time barbeques roll around….but a fairly easy tip to try to stay on track. I just look at my family and know I want to be around for a very, very long time!

My family hears “5 a day” (fruits & vegetables) professed by me at least 4 times a week. It is not always easy to get them on-board. One thing that seems to be working for us, during meals where we are having a sandwich, instead of potato chips I make up a small plate of fresh veggies and give them each a dipper of their favorite dressing. It doesn’t work 100% of the time, but I consider each switch a victory for healthy eating habits.

I am a working mom of two kids 5 and younger, so time to stay fit is limited. But whenever I can, and weather permits, I ride my bicycle to work and get a workout as well as help the environment.

I have a terrible sweet tooth. When I’m having a craving for sweets I tell myself, “Eat some fruit, and then if you still want that ____ (cookie, chocolate, ice cream, etc.) then you can have some.” I eat a couple pieces of fruit and 90% of the time it satisfies my craving.

Cut up vegetables like peppers, celery and carrots right when you buy them and put them in GLASS containers in the fridge with a little water.  Something about seeing the colors in the fridge and having them ready to eat, makes me reach for them as a snack, even if I headed into the kitchen aiming for the Dubliner cheddar cheese (my normal snack go-to). And, take the stairs. I travel a ton for work and making the time to exercise while away from home always ends up on the back burner for me. Taking the stairs instead of the escalator in the airport wakes me up again after sitting for so long, and makes my knees feel like they’re slightly less than 100 years old.  And especially at hotels – most of the time you can get to your room and back in the time it takes to wait for the elevator!

Whenever I make a bowl of cereal, I use a small coffee cup as opposed to a regular cereal bowl, it helps me limit my portions to what is most likely “one serving” according to the nutritional facts on the side of the box!

I make good health a part of my daily life by commuting to work on my bicycle.
Bill, Plant Manager

I make good health a part of my daily life by remembering to refill my water bottle as soon as I get to the office every morning and refilling it after every meeting. This helps me to stay hydrated all day! I also pack my gym clothes in the car every morning so I have no excuse but to go to the gym or for a run after work every day! This is a picture of my sister and I running the Brooklyn Rock ‘n Roll 10K last fall – it took lots of water and training to successfully complete that race.
Lindsay, Brand Manager

I try to get some exercise in at least 3-4 times per week. I like to walk so if I can’t get to the gym, I try to get out for a walk. Also, I try to limit my snacking and set that example for my son.
Nancy, National Food Team Leader
