Missing: Local Recycling Heroes

Eric Hudson, Preserve

The partners behind Preserve® Gimme 5 (a #5 plastics recycling program) are scouring the country to recognize inspiring recycling efforts and we’re looking for a little help.

When Preserve® rolled out the Gimme 5 recycling program in 2009 we hoped that individuals would join in and contribute their hard to recycle #5 plastics. What we didn’t anticipate was the outpouring of support the program received from the get-go. Over the last couple of years we have been hearing moving stories from all over the nation. Now we want to honor these recyclers and share their stories.
The Gimme 5 Local Heroes contest is currently underway. We are searching for avid and dedicated recyclers.  Enter now athttp://www.preserveproducts.com/local-heroes.

Once all the entries are in we’ll select 10 winners from 10 different regions. We’ll celebrate their efforts and passion for recycling during Earth Month. Those actions won’t go unnoticed. All of the Gimme 5 partners are coming together to issue each winner a prize package including a Brita water pitcher and filters, $50 in free products from Seventh Generation® and a selection of products from Preserve®, Tom’s of Maine and Stonyfield Farm®.

So please take a minute to think about who that special recycler is in your life and visit our site to nominate them. They could include that helpful clerk at Whole Foods Market who always talks about recycling or your neighbor who offers to take in your #5 plastics or your child’s teacher who created a school collection program. Where are the Local Heroes of recycling? At the office, in your community, or even under you very nose – it could be you. Regardless, let us know about these individuals and enter their stories. If you add a picture or post a video of them along with your entry, even better.

Just last year, thousands of consumers across the nation took time out to recycle through the Gimme 5 program and helped the program reached its goal of 50 tons, or 100,000 lbs. of recycled yogurt cups, hummus and cottage cheese containers, and countless other tremendously reusable # 5 plastic packages. That’s the equivalent of 1.3 million Tom’s of Maine deodorant containers!

To enter the Gimme 5 Local Heroes contest or nominate a recycler you know, visit http://www.preserveproducts.com/local-heroes  before March 31, 2011.

Are there opportunities with the Toms of Maine partner with GIMME5 recycle program available currently? I have a group of People to People Student Ambassadors that are interested in an environmental project. Exciting they are motivated to help SAVE THE PLANET!
